Exciting Strategic Direction for the Outdoor Industry
Schaffer&Combs is pleased to support Outdoor Industry Association — the organization ensuring the growth and success of the outdoor industry — with its Strategic Planning work this year.
OIA invested significant time and effort through the past several months thinking deeply about the future: how can this trade association best serve its members and ensure the success of the industry? With a variety of relevant and influential trends at play — online retail, a changing definition of “outdoor recreation,” sustainability advances, and urbanization, to name a few — OIA needs to stay ahead of the curve and develop the products and services members need most to improve their businesses.
The result of these efforts was unveiled at the Industry Breakfast on August 3, 2016, where Executive Director Amy Roberts overviewed the three key pillars for OIA’s future: Sustainability, Policy, and Outdoor Participation. Amy then introduced speakers — Rue Mapp (Founder and Executive Director of Outdoor Afro), Luis Benitez, (Director, Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office), and Bryan Welch (CEO, B the Change Media), who exuded the significance of these Pillars, invigorating members about the future of OIA, and the industry at large.
Attendees “caught the fever” (video link) during the presentation, setting an excellent tone for the 4-day Summer Market event in Salt Lake City, Utah. About 30,000 industry representatives attended the Summer Market in 2016.
By working with OIA, S&C was able to leverage the firm’s significant knowledge and experience in membership and industry organizations, manage a multi-stakeholder engagement and facilitate its distinctive, phased and directly operationalized approach to strategic planning. It’s inspiring to see how OIA Board, staff and other key stakeholders are embracing the new strategic direction of the organization and we are looking forward to see what the future holds for the organization and industry at large.
